+Key information about Euros
The Euro is represented by its currency code (EUR) and symbol €. Introduced as an official currency on January 1, 1999, coins and banknotes were first circulated on January 1, 2002.
Carrying a mix of euros on a Travel Money Card and cash offers the most flexibility when visiting the numerous European countries that use the euro as legal tender.
Euro notes
A €500 note is in circulation but has not been issued since April 2019. The first series of Euro notes are gradually being replaced by the second series (Europa) which does not include a €500 denomination. Banknotes from the first series are legal tender and will always retain their value.

Common questions about euros
We all want to get the best rates possible for euros when heading abroad. However, the optimal time to convert your British pounds to euros is difficult to predict, as fluctuations from economic indicators, geopolitical events, and market sentiment happen daily.
Ultimately, it depends on your individual circumstances, travel plans, and willingness to monitor the market. To help keep track of the euro market, we have a useful rate tracker you can sign up to.
You can currently spend your euros (notes and coins) in the following destinations:

You can purchase your euros from us via credit or debit card. Regardless of how you buy your euros from us (online or in-store), rest assured, we won't impose any credit card handling fees. Yes! With our Buy Back Promise we can buy back your unused euro notes at any one of our UK retail stores at the original transaction exchange rate up to a maximum value of £250, for a fee of just £4.99. Learn more about our Buy Back Promise.
You have the flexibility to use your credit and debit cards across Europe, but be aware that your bank may impose a transaction fee for international card usage. These non-sterling charges can range depending on your provider.
Yes, cash is still frequently used in Europe. We would recommend a balance of cash for tips, taxis, and little treats, and the Travelex Money Card for peace of mind on larger purchases when travelling.
Not all countries in Europe use the euro as their official currency, so it’s worth checking before you travel and ordering your currency ahead of your departure.
Some EU member states, such as Croatia, only recently adopted the euro, whereas others, such as Hungary and Poland, have not yet adopted the euro but will once they meet the EU's necessary conditions.
